Get Involved

While your academic preparation (i.e., grades) is no doubt a central component in your success, at Mays Business School we want well rounded students. Students who are work well with others and communicate effectively. And we want students who are active in their communities and schools.

So, get involved in activities and organizations within your school or community that interest you. It will help you more fully develop. Plus, it will prepare you for student life at Texas A&M where there are more than 700 student organizations.

We encourage you to keep track of all you are doing in high school by creating a portfolio or personal file. It will be a big help when applying for college.

How to Create a Personal File

What you need:

  • 2” or 3” ring binder or a file box
  • Clear sheet protectors or file folders

How to Organize:

You can divide your personal file as you like, but here are some suggestions:

  • Awards/Achievements
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Community Service
  • Work Experience

What to Include:

The following should be kept in your personal file. Be sure to make note of important dates, such as when something was received, when you joined an organization, etc.

  • Report cards
  • Awards and achievements. Designate if these are local, district, state, national, or international level.
  • Certificates
  • Material from clubs or organizations to which you belong. Make sure you include time commitment and duration of involvement.
  • Record of offices/leadership roles held in clubs, organizations or at work
  • Record of work experience (including babysitting, regular chores, etc.). Make sure to include dates of work and hours per week.
  • Record of academic competitions. Make sure to designate if these are local, district, state, national, or international level.
  • Record of community involvement. Make sure to include time commitment and length of involvement.
