Mays Business School Undergraduate Program

Financial Aid Basics

We understand that paying for college can be stressful. That's why Mays Business School and Texas A&M University make every effort to help you find the financial help you need to pay for college. This financial assistance includes scholarships and grants (non-repayable) and loans (which must be repaid). Part-time employment (called work study) is also available to help offset the expense of college.

Getting Started

Texas A&M uses a common application to determine your eligibility for receiving financial assistance. This form, called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), estimates your need based on your and your parents'/guardians' most recent tax information.

The FAFSA can be filed electronically or in paper form. (For faster processing, we recommend using the electronic version). You should fill out the FAFSA after you and your parents/guardians have completed your latest tax returns, usually during your senior year after January 1.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

Here's a brief rundown the financial aid application process.

  1. Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online. Be sure to request that your information be sent to Texas A&M University on Step 5 of the form.
  2. Your FAFSA information is sent to Texas A&M.
  3. Texas A&M will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) that sums up the information you submitted. You must check this information for accuracy and verify it. If corrections are needed, make them and return the report to the Texas A&M.
  4. Texas A&M will then send you a financial aid award letter that summarizes which type of assistance you qualify for. This assistance could include grants, work-study or loans. You can accept or reject any or all of the assistance offered. Note: Scholarship awards you receive from Texas A&M are sent separately. Scholarships you receive from outside sources (non-Texas A&M) will not be listed on the form.
  5. You return your award letter indicating whether you would like to accept or reject the financial assistance.
  6. You should send documentation of outside assistance (for example, local/community scholarships) in the form of a check or letter to Texas A&M's Financial Aid Office.

Helpful Hint: If you would like to know right now how much the federal government estimates you and your family can pay for your college, visit Sallie Mae. (Note: It will ask you for estimates of your and your parents' income, so have that information handy.)
